Who we are
The building
St Paul’s had been here for 132 years, giving glory to God and serving the community of Grove Park. We are an Anglican parish church in the diocese of London seeking to serve our area with open hearts and minds and a welcome to all.
The Church was built though the generosity of the 7th Duke of Devonshire in 1872, in many ways a typical Victorian church. It was designed by Henry Curry and has an unusual fleche and mock belfry.
The church hall was destroyed during WWII and the church suffered damage to the east end, to all the windows and to the south transept. This was later converted from a Lady Chapel into a Community Room.
The high altar was designed by Lord Norton and brought from St Margaret’s Church in Birmingham in the 50s. The large painting of the Transfiguration was painted in 16th century Florance, and has an ornate Florentine frame. The Stations of the Cross were painted by Enid Chadwick.
The summer of 2006 saw major works carried out to the church room - now called the Isis Rooms. A floor has been added, giving us more flexible space, a fully equipped kitchen and toilets, including disabled facilities. We have a piano there, have held tea dances, parish lunch's in aid of the MicroLoan Foundation, the Grove Park Playgroup meets there regularly and other community groups are enjoying the new facilities.
Additionally we have had the pews stripped back to their original pine, making the whole body of the church seem lighter and more welcoming. This year, we have also redecorated the inside of the church, have had the picture restored and attended to the floor tiles.
Supporting charities
St Paul’s is proud of its association with local charities. Several members of the congregation served on the fundraising committee for St Mary’s Convent Appeal, strengthening our links with their community life and other churches in Chiswick. The church is also strongly linked with the MicroLoan Foundation. You can read more about its work in Malawi at the back of the Church. Do please take this opportunity to become a Friend of MLF, as the charity aims to raise £300,000 over the next three years to extend the reach of its much needed work to more people in Malawi. They need your prayers and your help – either financially or in fundraising.
