Quartet for the End of Time

Michael Reed (piano), Beatrice Loveday Chappell (violin), Ben Chappell (cello) and Jacob Perry (clarinet)

French composer Messiaen created his masterpiece in a prisoner-of-war camp during the early days of World War II. Drawing together his Christian faith, his love of birdsong, and fervent belief in the sanctity of human life, he wrote the piece for the instruments and players available to him in the camp. An audience of 400 prisoners together with German officers attended its first performance. In this, the 80th anniversary year of VE Day, and at a time when so much of the world is still ravaged by conflict, this profoundly moving work has never been more relevant. TThis unique performance will include an introduction to the piece by Michael Reed.

The concert also includes classical and cabaret songs from the period, performed by acclaimed German soprano Felicia Brembeck.

Gustav Holst Ensemble Concert

We are delighted to welcome the Gustav Holst Ensemble for their debut performance. Joined by the distinguished pianist John Reid, the Ensemble will perform two masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire: Mozart Piano Quartet in G minor K.478 and Fauré Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor Op. 15.  Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor, composed in 1785, is a pioneering work in the chamber music repertoire. One of the first pieces ever written for this combination of piano and strings, it is striking for its dramatic power and emotional depth. Meanwhile, Fauré’s Piano Quartet No.1 in C minor, which was completed in 1879, is one of his most beloved chamber works, brimming with passion and refinement. Written during a turbulent period in the composer’s personal life, the quartet moves with emotional fluidity with Fauré’s signature harmonic language and melodic elegance shining throughout.
